I wish I was a sheep

Gonja Sufi and Gaslamp Killer's 'A Sufi and a Killer' is finally out. If you happen to be in LA on the 15th, check out the release party at Echoplex - both the Sufi and the Killer will be playing DJ sets. For the rest of us in the rest of the world, listening to the album on repeat is just going to have to do.

I also recommend checking out the upcoming issue of Dazed and Confused, featuring an interview by Deputy Editor Tim Noakes, that apparently involves a road-trip across the US. Awesome.

the place where we were hidden

I discovered 'IV' (four) last year at the excellent wavesatnight. From first listen I was hooked to IV's darkly cinematic sound and immediately started an exchange with the band, hoping for more background. They happily sent me music, but weren't very generous with information.

Finally last week, and upon further probing, IV admitted to being two graphic designers from Paris with an obsession for film (as evidenced by their video above for the track 'Alaska - The Place Where We Were Hidden). They also said that they have something exciting coming up soon, but apologized for not being able to discuss it.

These cryptic boys (are they male even?) of IV obviously know which buttons to press because I am now even more enamoured by them. I'm looking forward to the next precious nugget of information delivered to my inbox (and can't wait for more musical presents).

Thank you IV.

A Sufi and a Killer

The upcoming Gonja Sufi x Gaslamp Killer collaboration entitled 'A Sufi and a Killer' is fucking....killer. Which is pretty much what you would expect from the pairing of an insanely eclectic producer like Gaslamp Killer with the intriguing vocal talents of Gonja Sufi. The album is impossible to pigeonhole - it starts off with an intro called 'Bharatnatyam', and then spirals into tracks with samples torn from Indian film, 60's psychedelia and funk; sounds are undressed then distressed to the point where their hiss and crackle almost match the strained lilt of Gonja's vocals. It's a fucking gorgeous album, and I can't wait to listen to it on repeat.

'A Sufi and a Killer' drops on Warp records in early March. I'm posting two tracks with a distinctly discobb bent (read : slow jams), but I urge you to buy the record once it's out. It's worth it.

The Base of the Pit

Antifamily were (are?) a London-based collective of artists, marxists, designers and musicians. There's very little information about them floating around the internet, but whatever you do find is congratulatory and gushing. It's not hard to see why - their anarchist/post-punk/freeform/beatridden sonic experiments are surprisingly melodic (unlike a lot of other 'art' bands). They're also really danceable. I especially like the numerous female vocalists that are paraded around in the songs. They're all dark hair and scowling faces, the kind of women you would expect to be entranced by at a dinner party.

I'm not sure if Antifamily still produce any music, though I do know that members of the collective went on to form Petit Mal (also featured here on discobb).

For more mp3s check out the Antifamily website. It's essential stuff.

Another Music : Soul

DJ Solo (aka Mr. Discoballbreaker) has started a new bi-weekly show on Ness Radio. Last week's mix featured soul and funk sounds from the likes of Black Ivory, El Michel's Affair and Teddy Pendergrass (RIP). I know I can be pretty biased when it comes to Solo's work, but I love this mix. It goes from soulful to sleazy to sunny, and all without missing a (danceable) step.

Check out this wonderful cover of The Artic Monkeys for example :

dance for me

i have such a weakness for breathy vocals and lazy beats. the kind of sounds you can imagine playing at a decadent after hours - where eyes are dreamy and last night's clothes are crumpled heaps on chairs and tables and stools. let's be honest, there's nothing sexier than dancing to a slow song (see here). it's the kind of dancing done with eyes closed and fingers close to the body.
