Eye Love You

'Eye Love You' (by Iranian artist Shirin Aliabadi) is made up of numerous drawings, splashed with colour and glitter, and pulsing with the giddy optimism of a young school girl. For the show's music, I looked at beautiful women singing about their loves and lives. Sparkling musicians like Joanna Newsom and Fiona Apple, emotive performers like tUnE-yArDs and Scout Niblett, and my personal favourites - Electrelane. This is a grrl mix built out of the soft and the steely, just like all the grrls I know.

2. tUnE-yArDs - For You
3. Scout Niblett - Poms Poms

7. Best Coast - That's The Way Boys Are
8. El Michel's Affair - Hung up on my Baby
9. Electrelane - The Valleys

Where the Wild Roses Grow

I woke up this morning to find myself in the midst of a musical name-dropping competition between AvantCaire and Tom Gara. We're still embroiled in the heat of battle (I will crush them).

Anyway, this intercontinental (AvantCaire is currently in snowy New York) challenge has reminded me of the Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue duet 'Where the Wild Roses Grow'.

I would happily sacrifice myself to the river if Cave was the one with the rock in his fist. Swooooon.

Follow @avantcaire, @tomgara and @discobb for updates.

Absolute, unconditional, unquestioning

'For You, Anything' by James Clar, 2010

Whether you believe in love or not, chances are you've felt deeply enough about someone to risk life and limb for them. I love how this piece strips down any romantic and delicate notions to one visceral truth - there are no limits to love.

Smoldered Fields

Mohamed El Amin believes that every moment deserves a soundtrack. The Dubai-based photographer takes pictures that are often named after songs or accompanied by musical recommendations. This is a concept I can completely get behind, being a little obsessed as well with soundtracking life.

Mohamed's recommendation for this image is a track by Canadian post-rockers, Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra. As his portfolio is mostly filled with pictures from live performances, I've decided to put up a live version of 'American Motor Over Smoldered Field'.

A Moment Defined

'A Moment Defined by a Point and a Line' by James Clar, 2010

James Clar is an American artist (and friend of discobb) who in March, will be debuting a new show entitled 'Acceleration'. The show explores various themes such as identity, violence and religion; as well as the profoundly human ideas of love and pleasure.

One of my favourite pieces is the one pictured above. In the words of the artist -

The 3 pieces in this series each represent a historical assassination. They reduce a pivotal moment in history to basic math, the point of impact for each bullet and the angle of trajectory, displayed as lines of light intersecting a clear acrylic block.”

The subjects chosen for the series are Malcolm X, King Faisal, and Amadou Diallo - all of whom were the victims of brutal and politically driven shootings. Malcolm X was shot 15 times during a speech on black nationalism; King Faisal was shot by his nephew twice, in what is believed to be a CIA driven assassination; and police shot 41 bullets into Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo - 19 of which hit him.

research wall

The series brings up questions of ethnic and religious xenophobia as well as the current state of Western/Middle East ties. At the heart of it all though, each of the pieces takes an historically explosive (pun unintended) event and attempts to reduce it to a mathematical meeting of a point and a line.

Sense of Sight

untitled, 2010

Jalal Abuthina (a Dubai-based photographer and friend of discobb) likes his world in blues and greys. His images often have an other-worldly quality about them, and he's hugely influenced by music (last year, Jalal wrote a guest-post for discobb that featured a mini mix of spaced out and ambient sounds).

Leading up to the opening of 'Sense of Sight', a group show at the DUCTAC, Jalal has sent us an outtake from the series he is showing. Accompanying his image is a track from the new (and fucking amazing) Four Tet full length, 'There Is Love In You'.

Get your headphones on.

the imprint of rituals

pouran jinchi's 'ritual imprint' opens this evening at the third line (dubai). i was in the gallery a few days ago when they were putting together the exhibition. the artworks were still nestled within bubble wrap so i could only just make out the delicate shapes captured on paper. the circles (which are formed by rubbing charcoal over thin paper, under which sit textured prayer stones) are a reminder of the repetitive nature of ritual, especially religious rituals. the shapes actually remind me of molecules, attracting and repelling each other in some vast nebulous space.

the mixtape i put together for this exhibition features murky sounds by xiu xiu, peace out!, gang gang dance and boards of canada. full tracklisting and download, after the jump.
